Located at a distance of 3.5 km from Haridwar, the mythological importance of Kankhal is equal to that of Haridwar. The description of Kankhal is heard in many accounts related to Mahabharata and Lord Shiva. According to mythological beliefs, Kankhal is the place where King Daksha's daughter Sati committed Sati on her own after her father insulted Lord Shiva. After that Lord Shiva sent Veerbhadra here and killed King Daksha. After killing King Daksha, Lord Shiva took away the burning body of Sati from this place. Presently Kankhal is known as a suburb of Haridwar and Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple is also built in Kankhal to recognize the mythological event between Lord Shiva and King Daksha.
